A pair of cloisonné enamel vases, each decorated with numerous plovers in flight above stems of roses and daisies on a black ground. The foot decorated with seashells, seaweed and stylized waves, the shoulder and neck with stylized ho-o amongst clouds and paulownia.
Unsigned
Although unsigned, these vases can be firmly attributed as early works by Namikawa Sosuke for the Shippo Kaisha of Nagoya. The decoration on the shoulder is typical of his early work and the overall style is similar to the pair of vases he exhibited at the Amsterdam Exhibition in 1883, illustrated in The N D Khalili Collection of Japanese Art, Meiji no Takara, Vol. III no. 3.
