A very rare single case lacquer inro decorated in silver wire with the design of a western shield with the letters XQTZ and BL, the reverse of the same design with the letters DJA and V. The details in silver wire, mother-of-pearl and red lacquer.

This rare inro is probably made for an exotic western taste for the Japanese domestic market. A very similar example is illustrated in W. L. Behrens Collection Part II, Lacquer and Inro, Henry L. Joly, original published 1912, London, plate XVII, no. 138. and described: wood, inlaid with German silver wire, the tiny nails seen in the illustration standing in relief, and the leaflets fitted with coloured material, on the back the letters WQTZ surmount a shield similar to that illustrated, but with the letters BL inside.
