Kogo no Tsubone, a court lady who excelled at playing the koto and a favourite of the Emperor Takakura of the 12th century, was hated by the Empress and exiled from the palace. For three years, the Emperor searched for her without success. A young courtier, Minamoto no Nakakuni who was a poet and excellent musician, discovered the lady in a house in the village of Sagano through the sounds of her koto.
