Japanese lacquer maki-e, a complex and time-consuming production, reached its peak during the Meiji period. The exquisite works were introduced through domestic and international exhibitions and artists such as Shibata Zeshin, Kawanabe Iccho, Shirayama Shosai and Akatsuka Jitoku became internationally renowned.
